Motorcycle Safety
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, "Motorcycle fatalities account for 13 percent of all fatalities in 2008 and, in 2007 alone, the number of motorcycle riders or passengers killed on the nation’s roads increased 6.6 percent over the previous year." Due to rising gas prices, ability to use HOV lanes, and an increased appreciation for riding, is even more important that riders practice safe riding.
Be Safe
- Wear reflective or fluorescent clothing, especially when riding at night.
- Wear suitable clothing for the conditions. and uncomfortable rider is a distracted rider.
- No iPods or MP3's players. Some states have laws restricting the use of headphones while riding a motorcycle, other don't. my advice, is to enjoy the sound of the engine.
- Wear a Helmet. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Information Institute "In 2007 motorcycle helmets saved 1,784 lives. NHTSA says that if all motorcyclists had worn helmets, 800 more lives would have been saved. Helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries and 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
Parking Tips
- After parking, place the bike in first gear to avoid accidental rolling.
- Leave plenty of space around the motorcycle, so that other vehicles will avoid running into it.
- Avoid parking on a hill. If unable to avoid, be sure to park with the kickstand on the downside, or with the bike facing up the hill.
- If possible avoid soft surfaces, the kickstand can sink in dirt or gravel causing the bike to tip.
- If parking against the curb, park with the rear tire touching.
- And follow local parking laws. A ticket will ruin your day.
